Rising at 05.20 & around the corner from the hotel to Starbucks, my coffee provider of choice this morning because firstly, it’s open; secondly, it has a power outlet so that I can fire up the laptop. I was the second customer, after the homeless patron.
Writing notes for the Paradise – Paradise Lost – Paradise Regained exhibition opening this Friday in Gloucester, and listening to Soundscapes in Helsinki from the G3 tour of 2004. Noise Cancellator Beasts are keeping out the in-house Starbucks’ Sonic Selection In The Music Zone, and keeping in the sheer terror of the music. As a professional undertaking in front of audiences, the G3 Euro tour of 2004 is, in conventional terms, (most likely) the greatest failure of my career. I hold a deep personal gratitude to Joe & Steve, and their teams, for supporting & encouraging me in front of consistent booing every night; and for suffering criticism for including me in the wonderful ongoing G3 concept. Yet, listening now to Helsinki, and relating this to the exhibition shortly to open, I cannot consider it a failure. This is hard listening, yet it conveys its subject matter: Paradise, falling from Paradise & knowing it, and making the return. This is not music to like, and I may not even like it myself; and I’m pretty sure I don’t want to hear too much of it. But, for 30-40 minutes, this is powerful stuff. And, at several thousand watts, terrifying.

Our college is sponsoring and producing an All Star Guitar Night Show in … Wisconsin on Sept.16th. We would like to know if Mr. Fripp would like to speak in front our students and perform at the event.
My reply…
long experience suggests to me that students have very little interest in what i have to say, and even less in my playing.

Further work on a few words for Friday…
Paradise – Paradise Lost – Paradise Regained.
Paradise is our natural condition. This is the good news.
Our condition is unnatural. This is the bad news.
Love cannot bear that even one soul be denied its place in paradise. This is even better news.
But, we cannot bear love. This is terrible news.
Paradise is always available. This is more good news.
But, we are not always available to paradise. This is more bad news.
Firstly, we are in paradise.
Secondly, we fall from paradise.
Thirdly, we recognise that we have fallen from paradise.
Fourthly, we acknowledge our fall.
Fifthly, we address the journey that is our returning to Paradise, our becoming more fully who & what we are, which enables us to bear the world of the Real.
There is more good news: help is waiting for us. Actually, help has always been with us, but we were not able to accept Help. This is a condition of the Fall.
Paradise regained, for those prepared to persist in reclaiming what is (in a proper world) a natural state, is to know Paradise as if for the first time.
And, when we find ourselves once more in Paradise, we may find Paradise itself only a beginning.
